Roscigno Vecchia at 574 m above sea level, in the Alburni Mountains, due to its hydrogeological nature and built on clayey soil, was defined as a "walking town". It was abandoned between 1902 and 1908 due to geological instability but in reality the old town did not move and is still in the same place today. The houses partially collapsed (not due to the landslide) but due to abandonment and lack of maintenance. This town gives back to the eyes of today's visitor an almost unreal atmosphere, and preserves its ancient historical-environmental values. The name of the town derives from "Rusino" which appears in some writings from 1086 (kept at the Abbey of the Santissima Trinità of Cava de' Tirreni). In the center of Piazza G. Nicotera you can see the eighteenth-century mother church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari and the ancient fountain, symbol of the historic center and behind the fountain "Casa Dorina" where Teodora always lived until her death in 2000. Lorenzo last, only and true inhabitant of Roscigno Vecchia. The village has not been affected by modernity, preserving the urban and architectural features of an eighteenth-nineteenth century agro-pastoral centre. For all these and other reasons, in 1998 Roscigno Vecchia was included in the list of UNESCO heritage sites.
