La 24 Heures du Mans è una famosa gara di durata di automobilismo che si svolge annualmente al Circuit de la Sarthe, nei pressi di Le Mans, in Francia. Viene organizzata dall'Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). Inoltre è la gara più importante del Campionato del Mondo Endurance FIA. La prima gara si svolse il 26 e 27 maggio 1923 e da allora è disputata annualmente in giugno, ad eccezione del 1956 (in luglio) e del 1968 (in settembre, per tumulti politici nel Maggio francese). Venne cancellata solo nel 1936 (ragioni economiche) e dal 1940 al 1948 (seconda guerra mondiale e dopoguerra).
La gara iniziava alle 16:00 di sabato per terminare alla stessa ora della domenica ma da alcuni anni inizia e termina alle ore 15. Eccezioni furono l'edizione del 1968 che iniziò alle 14:00, quella del 1984 partita alle 15:00 a causa della concomitanza delle elezioni generali francesi e quella del 1998, nuovamente alle 14.00, per via della concomitanza con i mondiali di calcio disputati in Francia.
La gara si disputa su un tracciato semi-permanente della lunghezza di oltre 13 chilometri, utilizzando per buona parte strade aperte alla normale circolazione durante l'anno. Nel corso degli anni diverse sezioni appositamente costruite hanno sostituito le strade normali, in particolare le Curve Porsche che escludono la vecchia e pericolosa parte della Maison Blanche in cui il circuito sfiorava degli edifici.La gara prendeva tipicamente il via con quella che è diventata nota come la "partenza Le Mans": le auto allineate su un lato della pista, i piloti sull'altro. Quando la bandiera francese segnalava il via alle 15:00, i piloti attraversavano di corsa la pista, entravano nelle auto e partivano. La "partenza Le Mans" è anche il motivo per cui le Porsche da strada ad anche alcune Alfa Romeo continuano ad avere l'accensione a sinistra della colonna dello sterzo, invece del più tradizionale alloggiamento a destra. Questo permetteva al pilota di avviare il motore con la mano sinistra e con la destra inseriva la prima, così da uscire dalla linea di partenza più rapidamente.
The 24 Heures du Mans is a famous race of motoring that takes place annually at the Circuit de la Sarthe, near Le Mans, in France. It is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). It is also the most important race of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The first competition took place on 26 and 27 May 1923 and has since been held annually in June, with the exception of 1956 (in July) and 1968 (in September, due to political turmoil in the French May). It was canceled only in 1936 (economic reasons) and from 1940 to 1948 (World War II and post-war period).
The race started at 16:00 on Saturday to finish at the same time of Sunday but from a few years begins and ends at 15.00. Exceptions were the 1968 edition that began at 14:00, the 1984 one started at 15:00 at due to the concurrence of the French general elections and that of 1998, again at 2.00 pm, due to the concurrence with the football World Cup disputed in France. The race is held on a semi-permanent track over 13 kilometers long, mostly using roads open to normal traffic during the year. Over the years, several specially constructed sections have replaced the normal roads, in particular the Porsche Curves that exclude the old and dangerous part of the Maison Blanche where the circuit touched the buildings.
The race typically took the lead with what became known as the "Le Mans start": the cars lined up on one side of the track, the pilots on the other. When the French flag signaled the start at 15:00, the pilots ran through the track, entered the cars and left. The "departure Le Mans" is also the reason why the road Porsche to some Alfa Romeo continue to have the ignition to the left of the steering column, instead of the more traditional housing on the right. This allowed the pilot to start the engine with his left hand and with his right inserted the first one, so as to get out of the starting line more quickly.
